HADLEY NELSON

Week One

Prompt: What do you hope to achieve in this class by the end of the term? Are there special projects or technologies you’d like to see covered by the end of the term? Is there a site (or two) that gives you butterflies in your stomach? What is it?

Response: For this class I hope to achieve a more advanced understanding of css, html and javascript, and in general be able to problem solve the process of website building without wanting to throw my computer off a building. I don’t have any particular projects or technologies I’d like to see covered but I really struggle with javascript so any extra help with that is appreciated. There are definitely a couple websites such as Woven magazine, Hidden Characters clothing and LQQK studio (this one in particular) that really inspire and cause a reaction for me.

Week Two

Prompt: What are you planning to do for project 1? What content do you plan to show? How will you make each page unique while maintaining a cohesive design across the project? How will your color palette, imagery, and typography choice complement your subject matter?

Response: For project one I’m looking to do something fun and playful, my topic is going to be frogs with hats. The content will either be a collage of imagery or an image as the focal point followed with the written content of a bio about each unique hatted frog. The color will follow a cool toned theme and have general symmetry to visual imagery to unify the project but utilize slight variations to differentiate each page. The color will be cool toned referenced in nature to exemplify the natural topic with a pop of bright tone, type will be funky and playful, as well as imagery to cover the fun and silly topic in a unique way.

Week Six

Prompt: Why did you choose the business/cause that you chose? Why do you think your redesign will be better? What area/content will you focus on in your redesign? Look at two other similar websites. What stands out about those sites? What bothers you about them? How will you improve things in your own design?

Response: I chose Moody V as my business for Project 2 because I'm really inspired by the concept and product, I think reusable pads is such a wonderful product and I love the playful illustrations and vibrant colors. For the redesign I hope to upgrade the website design, unify the structure and design, make it easier to navigate and utilize the playfulness found in the products and product images. Other reusable pad company sites are often mild and not very fun, similarly to tampon marketing it feels muted and is tip toeing around the concept, I would love to really bring to the forefront of Moody V the playful and expressive side of their products.

Week Eight

Prompt: Read this article on mobile-first design and share your thoughts on mobile-first vs desktop first.

Response: It was really interesting to read this article on why mobile first is important, inherently I would have not considered this aspect of website design so critical but it really does make sense. Mobile usage is incredibly popular and accesable, the phone is often the first device a user reaches for. I'm really glad that I read this article, I was honestly kind of confused why we started with the mobile coding but this really helped break it down.

Week Nine

Prompt: Spend some time thinking about why you are pursuing a career in design. Really dig down, do the 7 "whys" tool in the article. OR If that's too challenging right now, consider people in your life or people who've inspired you. Think about what drives them, what their "why" is. Why did they work so hard to do XYZ, was it from past experiences they had, was it because they saw a need they were called to fill? What's their deeper "why?" Ask them if you know them, or look up some biographical information and try to figure it out. Write about either you or your inspiration.

Response: There are several reasons why I’m pursuing Design as a career, maybe seven, maybe more or maybe less but the biggest why’s that come to mind now are ...
